Kamala Harris
Kamala Devi Harris (born October 20 1964) was an American politician, attorney and vice president of United States. She is also the first female vice president and the highest-ranking female official in U.S. History, as well the first African American and second Asian American vice president. She is a member of the Democratic Party and was previously the attorney general of California between 2011 and 2017. In addition she served as a United States senator representing California between 2017 and 2021. Harris was born in Oakland. Harris received her law degree from Howard University. Harris started her career at the Alameda County District Attorney's Office. Then she was recruited to the San Francisco District Attorney's Office. In 2003, she was elected San Francisco District Attorney. Harris was elected Attorney-General of California in 2010 and was reelected in 2014. Harris served as the junior United States Senator from California between 2017 to 2021. Harris defeated Loretta Sanchez to become the second African American woman senator and the first South Asian American ever to be elected to the United States Senate. As a senator, she advocated for healthcare reform and federal de-scheduling of cannabis, a pathway towards citizenship for immigrants without a legal status and the DREAM Act, a ban of assault weapons and progressive tax reform. She gained a national profile for her pointed questioning of Trump administration officials in Senate hearings, which included Trump's second Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh and was accused of sexual assault.
